Power has long been something humanity has sought after, to witness it, to capture it, to understand it. But the power of a lightning strike is neither one we will capture or control, it is simply to be admired and revered.

This day was one of the most exhausting on this trip, after having a long drive completely around the salt flats due to the water levels and the routes being inaccessible. We arrived late to our campsite, and had spent the remaining hours searching for just the right spot to shoot, but as we struggled to find a spot amidst the incoming clouds, the rain began.

But a storm here means something truly special, as the lightning rolled in I got things set up. Esther is possibly my favorite to shoot for so many reasons, but her beauty and elegance is matched only by who she is as a person, and her intense love for adventure. Modeling in these conditions quickly becomes more of an adrenaline rush than anything else.

As she made her way into the darkness and the rain of the salt flats, a bolt of lighting struck behind her. Imagine standing in ankle deep water as lighting strikes around you.

The sky lit up, and this is what was captured.

But this moment was immediately followed by Esther yelling; “I’m burned, my hair is burned!”

I started frantically yelling to her to get back to the car and we scrambled in as fast as we could to get the gear and ourselves safely in the vehicle. Her hair looking like it had been electrified and a buzzing sound coming from her head, we anxiously made sure she was actually ok and then immediately took a look at what was captured.

This might be one of the most epic shots I’ve captured and one of the craziest stories to go along with it.
