Of Heaven and Earth
Bolivia has become one of my favorite places on earth, specifically the Uyuni salt flats, as a photographer, there are few places on earth that create such a canvas.
As if for once, in this one place, the earth and sky collide perfectly. As if intimately displayed to say, “we were always meant to be together” but heaven, somewhere above, and earth or what lies beneath… is there purity in what has risen? Is it too late for us to see innocence in what we are? Does heaven look down on us and neglect our beauty? Does it promenade around us as if to taunt us with its radiance, but be always out of reach? I don’t believe it to be cruel, and I have not once seen beauty that the heavens did not rely on the earth as well. For what we see when we see the beauty above is a mirror, a reflection of what we are, what we were meant to be, what we yet still can become..
All innocence and beauty, the simplicity of what is, nothing lacking, nothing demanding, simply the intimate beauty of heaven and earth, simply the intimate beauty of our place among it all
There is something in the trust of a model, a friend, to be in front of my camera, to allow me to capture them in a single moment, to then lay that moment before the world in hopes that they are seen with integrity and pureness
As I directed Esther in to place, as she bravely faced the cold and discomfort of being in the water, we would then simply wait, breathing as little and as shallow as possible so as not to disturb the glass. I would snap a frame and in that same instant the light would change completely as a single cloud shifted, each frame silently demanding to be seen. Each frame capturing beauty and what it is to be captivated by nature, both around us and as we are, the most beautiful thing on earth, humanity in all it was intended to be
Spanning 44k square meters the Uyuni salt flats are the largest in the world. The sun beats down on them by day, and by night a cold desert air consumes them, during the rainy season they are blanketed by water and create what is the largest natural mirror on earth. Yet they are not all this country has to offer, as photographers come from around the world to witness the beauty of this desert as it reflects the heavens, many often miss Bolivia; a home to places yet discovered and culture yet to be known. Bolivia is nestled, landlocked rather in the heart of South America, it boasts rainforests, deserts, high mountains that rival altitudes of Everest basecamp, and a rich culture that has long taken pride in producing foods that originate from their own soil. There are women that stand as a force for their history, a force for their future, and an all consuming tender and passionate love that rivals a mother’s. To think that a camera is what has led me to know such places and people, to have such an unearned right granted me to capture how I have experienced their home, it has changed me, but above all, it is humbling
